Different Kinds of Friends

A simple friend, when visiting, acts like a guest.
A real friend opens your refrigerator and helps himself and doesn't feel even the least bit weird shutting your 'Pepsi drawer' with her foot!

A simple friend has never seen you cry.
A real friend's shoulder is soggy from your tears..

A simple friend doesn't know your parents' first names.
A real friend has their phone numbers in their address book.

A simple friend brings a bottle of wine to your party.
A real friend comes early to help you cook and stays late to help you clean.

A simple friend hates it when you call after they've gone to bed.
A real friend asks you why you took so long to call.

A simple friend seeks to talk with you about your problems.
A real friend seeks to help you with your problems.

A simple friend wonders about your romantic history.
A real friend could blackmail you with it!

A simple friend thinks the friendship is over when you have an argument.
A real friend calls you after you had a fight.!

A simple friend expects you to always be there for them.
A real friend expects to always be there for you!

Hmmm... some food for thought... at first, I thought it was silly... but now it gives me cause to ponder...

How you do ANYthing is how you do EVERYthing... but you can't change EVERYthing all at once!

So... on my quest to becoming a better person... more intentional about how I live my life, I've discovered a profound truth. Admitting you need to change is the first step towards change, but if you try to take on all your changes at once, you tend to fail simply because you're so overwhelmed with things! That's why "yo-yo" dieting is what it is... you take a lifetime of habits and try to change them into an entirely new lifestyle... More and more, I'm realizing that small changes in your habits tend to be much more succesful. I am not who I am because one day I had the idea to acquire certain qualities... of course not. I decided to make this choice or that choice and all my choices and experiences, combined with my created being have culminated into this temporary result of how I am today...

In light of this discovery, I've decided to start making little habit changes to my life. When I take the time to look at my life, I am wonderfully happy with many things... but I know there are certain areas that I would like to improve...
1. My giving (or lack thereof) of my time, money and pride
2. My tardiness
3. My eating and exercising habits
4. My need to be in control and stress management
5. etc., etc., etc.

Everyone has things in their life that they wish they could change... and they absolutely can. Just one baby step at a time.

My first baby step is to stop eating after 7:00pm... and I'll tell you... that's harder than I thought! But, totally worth it. :) Once this becomes a natural habit that I just normally do, I'll my next habit which might be to do something for someone every day - not because I'm paid for it... but to do a random act of kindness just because it's good to do... or maybe I'll go on a walk for 10 minutes each day, doing deep-breathing and thanking God for all my blessings... or maybe I'll commit to journaling once a week... things that are practical, not daunting but good things in my life or in others...

"Baby Steps for Grown-Ups" - maybe I'll write a book on it. :) hah. I'll keep updating as to how my progress goes with the idea... :)

Blessings...

How you do ANYthing is how you do EVERYthing...

So... JP graciously dragged me to a wealth-management conference a few weeks ago... and I had a GREAT time! (Imagine that...) :) I learned SO much while I was there, but probably the phrase that had the most impact on my life was the above "How you do ANYthing is how you do EVERYthing."

For a few months leading up to this conference, I had been taking a step back and looking at my life and deciding what I wanted to change about it. Of course, there are always the old stand-bys... eat better, work-out more, spend more time praying/reading my Bible, budget my money better... I realized (like many people), I had created a pattern in my life of running away from difficult situations instead of facing and fixing them. I was a late, flakey, careless person and I didn't like it one bit. Not to say that I don't have plenty of wonderful things that I enjoy about myself... But instead of going with the familiar, "that's just how I am" phrase, I decided to aim towards growth instead of being stagnant... another thing he said... "You're either growing or dying."

So, I've begun to implement this "new idea." I've been reminding myself of this everytime I feel like going home and getting some work done or just relaxing instead of going to the gym after work... every time I brush my teeth but don't feel like taking the time to floss... everytime I look around my room at unfinished projects that I started, all excited about, but have now lost their glory and so they sit on the shelf... unfinished books, unfinished blankets, unfinished scrapbooks... I've decided to make it my goal to be a finisher. To follow through. To be there when I say I'm going to be there. Because I want to be someone people can depend on to get it done - and get it done well. I want to create the habit in my life (because after all, aren't we all just our habits?) of doing things well... kinda goes along with what the Bible says...

"In everything, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God."

So, not just to be dependable, not just to be the person I want to be... but to be someone that is better able to love God and love others because I follow through with what I say... pretty neat... :)

so...

Apparently you fall off the face of the planet when you get engaged... not really, but I have certainly been doing a lot of new things in the last 6 months!!! I started a new job that I absolutely love - it's like a dream come true, helping hispanic families, homeless people, low-income families, older people and more... I've been updating the church website, which has been a neat experience for me. I'm still learning a lot, and I have a long way to go, but it's a decent start!

JP is almost done with grad school... he's got 3 months left of student teaching (thank God!) and then he'll be done on June 19th. I'm SO excited for him to move nearby again!

Since our engagement, we've been up to lots of fun stuff... We dressed up as Superman and a Prom Queen for Halloween....

We visited his super fun family at Thanksgiving...

We built a ginormous mansion gingerbread house at Christmas and got to celebrate with both families...

2008 brought wedding planning, Jenny from Indiana, and then more wedding planning... we're hoping to get most things done ahead of time so we can just relax and enjoy it come the wedding day...

We went to all the California spots... Disneyland, Santa Monica, Hollywood and more... :)

JP took me to dinner on Valentines Day....

My parents came up for cake tasting! SO much fun! :)

So... more planning... I'm having a lot of fun. :) It'll be a super fun day! I'm sure there are many more things to come... :) (Especially AFTER JP gradumatates! :)) Till then...

We're Engaged!

So, I will eventually update all the other happenings, but since I've had nonstop requests for these pictures.... So, here you go!

---

It all started on Tuesday morning, when I walked into my office and found a lovely red rose on my desk, tied with a black velvet ribbon and with a note attached that said "Vanessa, You thrill me from head to toe. Thanks for the ADVENTURE. Love, JP" I immediately called him and told him how sweet the thought was... then a few phone calls between him and my boss made me a bit suspicious of what could possibly be going on, but I had no idea, so I didn't even think about it. After lunch, I came back to him swiveling around in my office chair! He quickly explained that I would not be returning that day, so I needed to grab whatever I wanted to take with me and prepare to be whisked off to my day of adventure.

As we traveled down to Palomar, listening to various adventure themes like Raiders of the Lost Ark from Indiana Jones, I kept trying to figure out what in the world we were up to! We stopped to buy granola bars and dramamine... He explained that I needed to "choose wisely" with the granola bars... what?? Once we arrived at the Palomar airport, he told the greeter that we had a 4 o'clock appointment for a biplane ride! How fun is that? Here are some pics from soaring over San Diego...

After that marvelous event, we drove back up for Thai food and then continued our adventures at Dave and Busters where we rode Harleys, killed dinosaurs and battled it out on the air hockey table... what a day!

---

The following morning, I came into my office with another rose on my desk, with a note that said, "Chica, Your giggles warm my heart. Thanks for the LAUGHTER. Love, me" Again, I called to say thank you and received instructions to be home and ready for another special date at 4pm. After dressing up in my new black dress and heels, we rushed out the door and headed towards Manhattan Beach. On the way, we listened to Jerry Seinfeld's last stand-up comedy routine, which was laugh out loud funny! We finally arrived at a nail salon, "because there's nothing funnier than a guy getting a manicure... and... well... you've been wanting this for a long time anyways... so why not?" After the most beautiful manicure I've ever received, we went to McDonald's for dinner, "because there's nothing funnier than getting all dressed up to go to McDonald's." Finally, we arrived at our main destination which included front row seats to the taping of America's Funniest Videos! It was great! And we're officially famous now... watch us on TV on Dec. 16th... you should be able to see JP's hand and my leg... hahahah j/k :) We had a great time and it was SUCH a fun experience. My favorite part was just standing in line and talking for the longest time... then coming back for hot tea and hot cocoa and chatting some more... another dreamy day... :)

The next morning, I walked into my office to find my final rose with a note that said, "Vanessa, Where our two hearts meet, there's nowhere else I'd rather be. Thanks for the ROMANCE. Love, your man." (Isn't he adorable?) Again, I called to receive further instructions and was told to wear something cute and that I'd be picked up around 5pm. When JP picked me up, there was a gorgeous card on my seat that was so sweet and romantic, with a final "P.S. Let's start tonight's celebration by revisiting the place we first 'monkeyed around.' You know the place..." Of course, I knew - we had spent the night of our first kiss playing at the park by climbing all over the monkey bars, climbing trees, dancing in the middle of the park, and having a wonderful time!

Once I arrived at the monkey bars, I quickly noticed the poster of JP sitting in the monkey bars with a poem on the back, leading me to our next special spot - the tree where we sat for hours talking about life... another poster on the tree led me to the place where we shared our first kiss... JP had laid out a black blanket for us to sit on with red rose petals spread all over the blanket and the table holding the laptop and the sound system. Of course I was surprised and touched at the beautiful set-up! He began the slideshow he had made for me, beginning with the song "God Blessed the Broken Road" sung by Selah. After this song finished, he told me to "sit tight" and he'd be right back. At this point, I'm thinking 'what the heck? where are you going???' Shortly after, I hear the background music for our song, "When You Say You Love Me" sung by Josh Groban - only instead of hearing Josh Groban's voice, I watched the most beautiful performance by JP playing his tenor sax to me. With tears streaming down my face, I enjoyed every moment and gave him a great big hug and kiss after he finished.

We sat down for a moment and he told me he had a gift for me. Thinking nothing of it, I quickly took the familiar heart-shaped box out of his hands, assuming it was the crystal he had promised to repair for me (since I had broken it the following day after he gave it to me for Valentines Day). After untying the satin ribbons and lifting the lid, I immediately realized that either my crystal had shrunk into little pieces, or this was not my crystal! JP began to propose to me and said a million wonderful things.... I couldn't possibly tell you what they were, but they were SO beautiful! :) I said "yes, with all my heart" and hugged and kissed him. During one of our kisses, JP lifted his hands to signal 8 of our best friends to come out from the trees and hills they were hiding behind and all of the sudden I was surrounded by cameras and hugs and kisses and smiles... It was SO wonderful! I got to show them all my ring and we had a toast in the park... what a wonderful moment to share with the ones I love.... :)

We hurried off from there to our next destination - I know... there's more??? We stopped quickly by Tammy and Ken's place for hugs and champagne and then continued on to dinner at one of our most memorable restaurants, The Coco Palm. We had the best table in the restaurant spread with rose petals, my favorite champagne and my crystal that I thought was in the FIRST heart-shaped box! This time, it was engraved with "Vanessa, I love you ~ forever JP" SO sweet! We had a fabulous dinner and spent the rest of the night swooning over the ring, our love and how blessed we were to be together... It could not have gone more perfectly, and I'm sure I will tell this story of our engagement to our children's children... :)

Vegas, day 3 (5/13/07)

This was the view from our hotel room at The Wynn... SO pretty!

After sleeping in a bit, we all got ready for Mother's Day breakfast (as did the rest of the hotel guests!). Dr. C (JP's dad) and I walked downstairs to wait in line while JP and M (JP's Mom) finished getting ready. After about 25 minutes, we were seated at this really neat couch-like booth. We celebrated with rasberry champagne and a peach belini, along with our normal breakfast meal.

Then we walked around The Wynn to see all of the neat features - everything was so elegantly decorated. Not a detail was left undone, as you can see by the bathrooms and even the drinking fountain that had decorations on it!

Just outside, we walked through an arched entryway into the pool area, with cabanas, a bikini bar, European bathing and a gorgeous pool set-up. It was pretty neat!

It was pretty warm outside, so we ventured back indoors to look at all the neat shops - this one was my favorite with the chocolate. Just amazing what they can do with that product! :) After walking around the steps, we decided to hang out by the waterfalls and drink lemonade and eat ice cream for lunch... It was neat just to sit and talk and we were all kinda beat from walking around all weekend, so it really ended up being perfect... On our way back through the hotel, we found a really neat gambling room that my dad would have LOVED and JP got a chance to get his shoes shined. He was so cute. :) It's one of those things he's always wanted to do... :)

After M & Dr.C took off, JP and I went back to see a few more things... we may have gotten a little distracted... :) We watched the Bellagio water show and toured around Caesar's Palace as well as a few other hotels. Lots of fun and my favoritest trip ever! :)
